Winter is here

Winter is almost upon us, the Annuals are out in the shops for those of us that recieving them at Christmas is boyhood ritual we've kept with for all our lives, the Christmas Trees will be arriving in our town and village squares with illuminations and guess what happened?

It snowed late Monday night here - believe earlier in the East Midlands - and kept up Tuesday morning as I was out attending the bins given our collection day this year is Wednesday as I decided it was sensible to move them earlier ready for kerbside collection.

I couldn't resist gathering the snow from the top of the bin a good one and half to to two inches up and throwning snowballs as the children were getting ready to walk to school in their thick coats and wellies.

Yes, this weather brings out the eternal boy in short trousers doing boyish things!

I also trimmed the size of the cds a bit as some new compilations came and I ordered up some special wallets that hold all the cd book and rears plus the disc taking up much less space from Slim Disc in Telford, Shropshire.

Weather and going back in time

There is apparently due to be a distinct probablity of snow later on this week following weather systems coming from continental Europe and as it was across this weekend gone it was colder and Monday we had rainfall.

You might wonder just what that got to do with boyhood life but for me Winters left evocative memories of rain falling on your legs, having to dry yourself and being wrapped up in your gloves, hat and dufflecoat.

Time was back then it would be the same attire you faced the snow in, walking with your wellies on to the corner store on errands or at least getting your sweets and comics and then there was playing in the snow with sledged or snowballs.

Somehow you remain that boy with your more or less 70's length short trousers on prehardened still doing more or less the same today as I walked in the shop yesterday looking and feeling like a kid that came in from the rain, damp.

The waiting game

I don't know about you but I have found the recent period of cold weather something of a challenge when it comes to getting about with having major issues with balence and a weakness on my left side making walking a bit of a struggle.

Thus the recent snow while quite enjoyable for snowball fights and making snowmen, being so much a reminder of the Winters of my official youth has in this district very much kept me housebound rather than being able to escape to the playground in the mornings for some fun.

This meant being more reliant on things such as reading where I did tackle this spiffing book in all its schoolboy brilliance.
This little collection of Just William Crimbo stories helped keep my spirits up, almost as up as my period shortened short trousers part from playing on the carpet with my toy cars.
