Somethings should not need to explained but in the liberal world they do.
The correct pattern is for girls to greet females such as grandparents, aunts, sister first going over to them and for boys to go over and greet grandads, uncles, and brothers because you are the same sex as them.
A boy is cared for, entertained and plays with the adults and older siblings of his own sex the same way a girl does with hers because in each instance they know what makes you tick and handle yourself because dear snowflakes, you are actually gendered and that is that!
You can normally tell in such a situation if something is wrong because the child goes for the wrong person as nearly all of us identify with our same sex friends and family.
Obviously when there is just Mum or Granny you go to them and greet them but then they should make a point of reacting to you as their son, grandson and so on. Never an 'it' or a 'they'.
